OSTEODENSITOMETRY
The main application of osteodensitometry (measuring bone density) is the diagnosis of osteoporosis and the assessment of the risk of bone fractures. The examination is carried out while the patient is lying down, requires no preparation and is absolutely pain-free.
- OSTEODENSITOMETRYOsteodensitometry plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, a disease of bone metabolism that accelerates the depletion of bone mass, leading to bone destabilisation and an increased risk of fractures.
Using digital X-ray imaging, the present condition of the mineralised substance in the bone can be determined and thereby the risk of fractures assessed. This is especially important for older patients or individuals with risk factors such as family history, the use of certain medication, or other important factors such as smoking, lack of exercise, vitamin D deficiency or oestrogen deficiency.
GOOD TO KNOW
- IS OSTEODENSITOMETRY COVERED BY STATUTORY HEALTH INSURANCE? If osteodensitometry is medically justified, the costs will be covered by your statutory health insurance. A referral by a doctor is a requirement. When we arrange your appointment, we can determine whether and when you would be entitled to coverage or reimbursement by your statutory health insurance provider.
- AT WHAT POINT DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO HAVE A ROUTINE CHECK-UP?As osteoporosis is extremely rare in healthy individuals under the age of 50, routine osteodensitometry is not recommended before that age is reached.
