Ultrasound imaging (sonography) plays a central role in health care. Ultrasound examinations can help with the early detection and treatment of potential health problems. They are non-invasive, pain-free and without exposure to radiation, making them suitable for children and pregnant women.

  • ABDOMEN Sonography of the abdomen is a valuable tool in the detection of abnormalities such as cysts, stones, inflammations or tumours. Abdominal examinations can be carried out on the internal organs in the upper abdomen (liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen) and the urogenital system (kidneys, renal pelvis, ureter, bladder; as well as uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes in women and the prostate gland in men).
  • SOFT TISSUESo-called “small part sonography” is a useful method for assessing much of the superficial tissue in the body. Depending on requirements, the skin, subcutaneous connective tissue, lymph nodes and superficial nerves, as well as the groin area and testicles (scrotal sonography), can be examined.
  • JOINTSUltrasound examinations of the joints help in the diagnosis of conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout and bursitis (inflammation of the bursa). Furthermore, ultrasound examinations can provide information in cases of injury and inflammation of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.
  • THYROID GLANDUltrasound examination of the thyroid gland helps in the detection of nodules, cysts and other abnormalities. It is also recommended where there are symptoms of thyroid dysfunction or a family history of thyroid problems.
  • ARTERIES AND VEINSUsing Doppler sonography, the flow of the blood in the blood vessels can be visualised. Common areas of application are the examination of the carotid arteries and the abdominal aorta, as well as the examination of varicose veins.
  • BREASTSBreast ultrasound is an examination complementary to mammography, and aids in the detection of abnormalities in the breast, such as nodules or cysts. It is recommended for women with dense breast tissue.
